A Paragraph from Yannick Auckland

Hello, I have been taken on to work alongside Kevin but to cover primarily the youth side of regional work.Although I have met some of you at the various meetings I've attended over the past three months, I thought it may be helpful to introduce myself to those I haven't!

I have worked in the VCS both paid and voluntarily, in a wide range of roles: fundraising, team and project management, community, preschool and youth work, and training. The past two years I've helped established the VoiCeS project supporting the CYP VCS in Cambridgeshire through the multiple challenges that face the sector across the region.Whilst frustrated and realistic about the scope of the task; communications, representation and networking have improved considerably.Partner relationships have been opened up, extended and deepened and there are new examples of multi-agency working being developed to meet the needs of CYP and their families.

Due to working only one day a week so far as a consultant to VYSER, my capacity to fulfil the many demands is somewhat limited. In the 15 days so far I have attended VYSER, NCVCCO, CME, CWDC, ContactPoint and YIPPEE meetings, presented with Kevin to a rather intimidating (purely subjective!) governmental CYP services meeting, attended an Integrated Youth Services event, and taken part in participation training.

I am beginning to squeeze in face to face meetings with VYSER members to build my understanding of local as well as regional issues. I look forward to getting to know your organizations better so that I can represent this perspective in the vital relationship building work that is so beneficial to effective CYP services.I will also be feeding in to the strategic and business planning that Kevin is currently producing – please do let me know if you have any youth based views to add to this process.

I shall use the VYSER newsletter for summary communication, if you have suggestions for contributing to or developing this vehicle, tell me! And let me know if it's useful!Do you read it?!I shall be forwarding interim news, consultations, etc via Jennifer Drake and will try to clarify/highlight pertinent information.I have attempted to clarify our mailing lists so I know who Kevin and I are sending things to.Many prefer to receive things twice but if you wish to remove yourself from multiple mailings let me know.

I will also be doing some additional work on around Teenage Pregnancy and workforce support. If you are or know of organizations I should be talking to (and many youth workers may be involved/interested in the Sexual Health area), can you please drop me in an email or call me?

Finally, I shall be supporting the input of CYP across the region into a GO EAST Conference on Making a Positive Contribution. If you know of groups of children and young people who would be interested in contributing, please contact me to find out more at: yannick.auckland@virgin.net

CYP Participation

Watch this space for a regular update on participation training, events, meetings and resources.Participation Works Network for England (PWNE) is funding a three year support and development programme for third sector organisations to enhance their participation practice.Besides improved information, and regional events, there will be improved links with YIPPEE (youth involvement participation partnership east of England), the pre-existing regional network.I will be attending and will feedback from this group but if any of you want to attend and don't currently, please email gerry.bathe@connexionssuffolk.org.uk.org.uk

IYS

Integrated Youth Services – no two look the same! However it would be useful perhaps to share some of our learning around this and be able to identify common challenges and possible solutions or ways forward where we see the need.I will be looking into how best to do this but as we have the TDA (Training Development Agency) and Go East offering input, one possibility is to do some sub-regional events. Can you please let me know your thoughts on how best we could support each other through this process and what you would like any event to look like and address. Also whether your organization would be willing to contribute to the day.

Youth Opportunity Card: Consultation Events

These are Tues 11 Sept, 6.30-8.30pm and Weds 19 Sept 2-4pm

For some years the DCSF has been attempting to find ways of placing spending power in the hands of young people. In Cambridgeshire the aim is to give 2000 young people, 13 – 16 (and 17 if in ft education), who are in receipt of free school meals or are looked after, £40 per month to spend on activities. It is important that the VCS is able to assist young people to use the scheme and offer the rich and diverse range of activities that are more tailored to local needs than those that are offered via the statutory sector. With this in mind, Cambridgeshire County Council is running two consultation events with the VCS, based at Young Lives, 1st Floor, 11 Bridge Street, St Ives, PE27 5EH.

If you are interested in attending one of these and finding out how this card could affect you and your young people, please respond to Simon.Bates@cambridgeshire.gov.uk
